Shadow and Darkness of the COL Series – key focus

Shadow and Darkness are as much characters in these books, as are Emma, Levi, Grayson and so on.

In the Children of Light (COL) books, Shadow and Darkness are as much characters as Emma, Levi, and Grayson among others. Moreover, my use of Darkness as the opposite of Light is purely literal license. Therefore, by extension, I am not insinuating that Satan is the opposite of God because he is not.

Satan is not the opposite of God

Let me be clear. God Is – He is the Great I AM. He is the creator of everything in heaven and on earth. He was not created, he always existed. But, Satan is a created being. God created him, for he began as Lucifer, a being of beauty and light. If you want to read more about Lucifer becoming Satan, see Ezekiel 28:12-19. In the future, I will post a more detailed summary of Satan. Also, John Wesley White has an excellent book called The Devil. All of the angels of heaven are created beings, and Lucifer/Satan is among them (J.W. White, The Devil). (Rev 4:11)

Revelation 4:11
“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you [God] created all things, and by your will, they were created and have their being.”

Ezekiel 28:12
You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

Therefore, Satan is not the opposite of God, for God is Satan’s creator. For instance, all the power Satan has, and don’t underestimate it for it is formidable, is what God has given him. Satan’s power is not of himself, it is from God. In comparison to God, he is no more than a gnat, to God’s omnipotence.

Darkness is the Opposite of Light in the COL Books

Let’s begin with what LIGHT represents in the Children of Light series. It is a symbol of truth, the TRUTH of the WORD of GOD. The truth shall set you free! (John 8:32). Light in the series also represents Christ’s light and presence in our life, it is a visible presentation of an inner transformation.

In the COL books, LIGHT is a gift of God to select individuals. Just as today, as followers of Christ, we receive gifts of the spirit, and no two people receive the same gifts. In the same way, in the COL books, some people receive the gift of LIGHT, but not all. Those who do become the defenders of the faith, the wielders of God’s truth, and a visible representation of God’s presence and power among them. Finally, in a post-rapture world, where shadow and darkness are ever-expanding, Light becomes the guarantee of what is to come. An eternity in the presence of God.

Shadow is the Absence of God’s Truth

Shadow in the COL series is the absence of God’s truth, and Darkness is the total absence of God. In a world of Shadow, God’s truth is not just hidden it is absent. It has been replaced by lies, Satan’s lies. Lies, which were initially accepted by those who rejected the truth of the rapture, who chose a life without God, and eventually accepted Satan as their lord instead. Now, they live in the Shadow and will live eternally in Darkness.  In other words, Shadow and Darkness trap and imprison, while Light sets you free.

The Nature of Darkness

Dr. Jeremiah in the Jeremiah Bible Describes the Nature of Darkness. He postulates that the Bible identifies darkness in four ways:

  1. Darkness is a person. Satan is the ruler of the kingdom of darkness (Eph 2:2; 6:12). So when the Bible speaks of darkness, it often refers to Satan,
  2. Darkness is a power. Spiritual darkness has power over non-Christians. It controls their thoughts, words, and actions, and they cannot break that control without Christ. (Acts 26:18),
  3. Darkness is a preference. Ungodly people prefer darkness so they can do whatever they want without being exposed. (John 3:19-21)
  4. Darkness is a place. Those who live in darkness – who practice unfruitful works of darkness – are headed “outside, into the darkness…” as Matthew 8:12 states.

The Overcomer

As Christians, as believers who have been born again, we have nothing to fear, for Christ has overcome Satan. Therefore, Satan is a vanquished foe. Because of Christ and his sacrificial death on our behalf, we live in the Light, even now. Plus, we can look forward to an eternity in God’s Light. But even more, we need to reflect God’s light on those around us. Therefore, we must act as lighthouses, drawing those in spiritual darkness into God’s truth and eternal Light. It is what we are called to do.

Easter is a reminder of Christ’s Sacrifice

As we are in the Easter Season, we need to remember Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf. We must take to heart Jesus’ commission to go and make disciples of all the nations. A commission that comes with His promise… I am with you always, to the very end of the age. (Mat 28:20)

Blessings,
Jana

  1. “Satan is not the opposite of God.” Yes! We need to get this! Thanks for reminding us! I know this, but I also tend to forget that the war has been one. I love the way you dug into this, Jana! One tiny flicker of light dispels the darkness!
